Päivi Laine, the Ambassador of Finland to Poland visited Finnlines’ ferry/ro-pax terminal in Swinoujscie on 27 September 2024. During the visit, Ambassador Laine was accompanied by Finnlines’ Vice President and Deputy CEO Thomas Doepel, Managing Director, Finnlines Poland Rafał Kwapisz and Finnlines’ Marine Manager Anders Hamming.

Response to the increasing market demand

Following an extensive development process, Finnlines opened a new connection between Malmö, Sweden and Świnoujście, Poland on 10 April 2024 and celebrated the launch at an official inauguration ceremony onboard Finnfellow on 28 May.

The new route has been developed in response to customer needs. The traffic between Sweden and Poland has been growing throughout the recent years. The progress is in line with Poland’s economic growth, which is one of the strongest in Europe. Swedish companies also have a strong position in Poland, which is also visible in the heavily trafficked sea route between Sweden and Poland.

“We see significant potential on this busy route. The Southern Baltic is a highly competitive region, and Finnlines is emerging as a leader in terms of tonnage deployed and services provided. The geopolitical situation and the subsequent halt in trade with Russia have affected the market. However, despite this, there are clear signs of recovery,” says Finnlines’ Vice President and Deputy CEO Thomas Doepel.

After the first six months, the volumes have been satisfying.

“Our new route between Sweden and Poland has been well-received by customers. Freight clients have embraced the new connection, and the outlook for passenger growth is promising,” says Doepel.

“We were honoured to welcome the Finnish Ambassador Päivi Laine, whose support scores our commitment to the Świnoujście area engagement and local development.”

Finnlines’ route to Poland marks its second introduction into the region, following nearly 30 years of successful operations on the Finland–Poland route.

The Sweden–Poland route connects the West Pomerania area in Poland to Malmö, the third largest city in Sweden. Malmö offers convenient connections to other parts of Sweden as well as to Denmark. Finnlines has been operating from Malmö since 2002 and, in addition to the new Poland route, the shipping company also offers daily liner services to Travemünde in Germany.
